The Role of the Master’s Thesis in the Programme
One of the most important components of the programme is the preparation of the Master’s thesis. In close consultation with their supervisor on a weekly basis, students work on addressing a current and relevant problem in the field.
The topic may involve testing and evaluating an existing technology, applying it to a novel purpose, implementing a modern technology through experimental, software-based, or modelling approaches, or comparing protocols and procedures.
During the thesis work, students learn to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies in a creative and focused way to solve a specific problem.
As medical physics is an applied science, thesis topics are often proposed by clinical partners, research institutes, or industrial stakeholders, and typically address real-world problems that are still awaiting solutions.
The thesis process spans three semesters and includes a summer internship. In the final semester, students work exclusively on their thesis.
Topics change from year to year, reflecting current challenges in the field. In many cases, topics are tailored to individual students, taking into account their interests and abilities. Therefore, students are encouraged to proactively contact lecturers, researchers, and partners, such as clinics, research institutes, and companies, working in areas that interest them, in order to help define suitable thesis topics.

By the end of the first semester, it is often difficult to determine which topic will be the most engaging or best suited to a student’s skills, attitude, and motivation.
In many cases, only after investing some effort into exploring a topic does it become clear whether it is the right choice. Therefore, it is possible to modify the thesis topic, and it is advisable to do so—if necessary—before the summer internship, preferably no later than after completing the Independent Laboratory MP1 course.

The final Master’s thesis topic is determined in consultation with the supervisor. Thesis topics may change from one academic year to another, so students are encouraged to contact faculty members and researchers working in their areas of interest as early as the first semester of the programme.
